philadelphia, but already they are dealing with a serious crime problem near campus. students living off-campus are getting robbed at the point of a gun. it is wednesday night, and the big story on "action news" tonight is a robbery spree on hawk hill. let's go live to "action news" reporter dann cuellar. and dann, you have the full story. >> that's right, jim. some students on edge in the wake of the rash of hold ups at gunpoint near the st. joseph's university campus. police say there have been three hold ups and one attempted hold up in the last couple of weeks. >> we're just concerned as the school year starts here that people living off-campus, just pay more attention to your environment. >> beginning as st. joseph's students were beginning the school year. >> between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. one case is two people walking together. the other three are individuals walking by themselves up in that

area. 2 to 4 kids on bikes between 14-17 years of age. and they are carrying a hand gun. >> the armed banditing are taking their cell phones, debit and credit cards and cash. >> and it takes a toll on you. public safety is it around but it gets hairy and it gets scary. >> normally we would walk but i drove here tonight because we weren't sure at night, a group of our friends like walking. so we just took the precaution to drive instead of walk. >> in a statement tonight the university says it has increased patrols in the area and urges students to take precautions. walk in groups and park in well-lit areas. the university says it also made escourts available by calling the public safety office. live at st. joseph's university, i'm dann cuellar for channel 6 "action news."

>> thank you. an abused puppy in delaware county in critical condition after somebody abandoned it in a duffel bag. spca workers call the 16 week-old pitbull duffy. rescued this afternoon from the park in chester, and duffy suffering from heat stroke with a temperature of 105. animal care workers say it is very touch-and-go right now. they will be monitoring her around the clock. they are asking for donations and for anybody who knows who left duffy in a bag to report the tip. is phoenix, arizona in the cross hairs of a high school shooter. they are calling the incidents act of domestic terrorism. the latest this afternoon, the miss rushed to a gas station to investigate what struck this white pick up truck of the projectile shattered the back passenger-side windows. the string of shootings occurred along an 8-mile stretch of interstate 10, the major road

through phoenix. and they are not staying well the shootings are related. >> i don't know if it is a copycat crime, multiple people. it is different days of the week, different hours of the day. >> so far no one seriously hurt or killed. however a 13-year-old girl was struck by shattered glass, and a tour bus and off-duty officer on the way to work have come under fire. maybe a sign of the times, but a sign outside of a church sparked a community conversation about race tonight. "action news" reporter sharrie williams live outside of the trinity lutheran church in lansdale. what was the story there tonight? >> jim, dozens of people showed up to void their thoughts and concerned about the black lives matter movement. it all started when this church posted "black lives matter" here on their marquis.

it received such an overwhelming response that the pastor then posted this. we heard you, can we talk? lots of people showed up to do just that, to talk about a difficult subject -- race. trinity lutheran is a known church in lance -- lansdale but went on the map when it posted on the marquis "black lives matter." >> and people are asking for help. and as christian that's what we do. >> the predominantly white church wanted to be supportive after the killing of people in north carolina. and there was also backlash. >> the negative responses reminded us that we weren't really aware of some other people in our neighborhood. >> the people questioned when the church was supportive of police. some wondered why not post "all lives matter" and the church responded

>> we can work together as a nation to help curb the violence. >> and it invited the community to come out and have a dialogue about race. more than 100 people filled the church, including wanda lewis campbell. >> a lot of people don't want to talk about race. people say if i stay something i will be accused of being a racist. but you have got to start somewhere. >> those in attendance were given ice breakers to try and pair down stereotypes. the church even invited the black lives matter group from philadelphia to be a part of the round-table discussion. >> we are not a hate group. we are not antipolice. we are antipolice brutality. >> some supported black lives matters and some were disappointed that others didn't join the conversation. >> i want to understand why you would be attacking each other over three words, black lives matter. >> and the church is hoping that this is only the beginning of

this conversation with race. hoping to have more of these dialogues in the future. live in lansdale, sharrie williams, channel 6 "action news." jim? >> thank you. a criminal investigation is underway tonight after several homes have been hit by stray bullets in the lehigh valley. people who live in stockerton say it has been happening for months and that the bullets are coming from a gun club that's a half mile away. the northampton county district attorney's office is investigating. the nearly 150 guns taken off the street in upper darby and sent to be melted down today. t it included swords and a hatchet and from domestic violence, or during drug raids. they do not make money from the weapons, only making sure they don't harm anyone again.

a federal grant to the rescue tonight to stave the atlantic city firefighters from the budget axe. paying to keep 88 firefighters on the job. they were slated for layoffs in the wake of four casino closings last year. the money is part of the federal government's safer program. it was announced today by u.s. senators menendez and booker. and the forest fire burning through 1,000 acres of the new jersey pine barons the past three days started with a barbecue. that's the word tonight. the state department of environmental protection says that someone didn't properly dispose of their charcoal. if investigator s find out who t was they may have to reimburse the state for fighting the blaze. fortunately no homes damaged by the flames. tonight it took only 30 seconds. 30 seconds for 10,000 tickets to be claimed for the big papal

pass on the parkway. the tickets were posted on the world meeting of families website and obviously thousands of people were poised to grab them. earlier today they released 10,000 tickets to the family festival on saturday night of the pope's visit. it took a whole two minutes for those tickets to disappear. when the crowds alive to see the pope, residents in south philadelphia are concerned about what's going to happen in their neighborhoods. "action news" reporter annie mccormick live on south broad street with more on parking problems. annie? >> and jim, if you live in south philadelphia, a lot of people know in some neighborhoods it is really tough to find a parking spot on a normal night, so it has a lot of residents asking what's going to happen when the pope is in town. >> parking is always difficult here in south philly, so you definitely have to find a parking spot. pray to like the park gods. >> we are flooded like it is, so park something a huge issue for us. >> the concern in some south

philadelphia neighborhoods, the line drawn here at south street when the traffic box begins to go into effect friday evening of the papal weekend. cars can drive in but can't leave. residents are anticipating people driving in to see the pope will fill already-crowded streets with few parking options. >> the parking already you have to drive around for awhile to find a spot period. >> covering more than a dozen neighborhoods in the second district, they are receiving a lot of calls with similar concerns. and few came to the meeting to address those issues. and they want residents to keep voicing concerns so they can solve any issues, hopefully so they can play host and take part in the historic event, too. >> we want them to have as much information as possible. we will continue partnering with other organizations making sure we get the word out. >> the city has done a lot of planning for the pope's visit, so i would have imagined there would be a real plan for

debt payment of $5.7 million. the district is under state oversight. the impasse over the state budget cut off state aid to public schools. new surveillance video tonight shows the two men and one woman that the camden county prosecutor calls persons of interest in last night's murder on broadway happening a block from cooper university hospital. tonight the victim identified as 19-year-old coleman and the authorities are asking for tips to identify the two men and one woman in this video who are wanted in connection with the case. linda weston pleaded guilty to murder in a deal that will spare her the death penalty. weston held mentally-disabled adults captive in the boiler room of her tomorrow in the tacony section of philadelphia in horrible conditions and tricked or coerced them to name her as caretaker.

we have learned that a british airways airplane was accelerating for takeoff when it caught fire in las vegas last night. pilots were able to safely stop the plane and get the passengers off. and this video from inside shows the engine blow and then flames erupt. flight attendants tried to calm passengers as they used the emergency slides. >> we are evacuating. we have the fire -- i repeat, we are evacuating. >> fire crews there within two minutes stopped it from getting to the fuel tank. the flames where were so hot

judged in preliminary competition in atlantic city tonight. the second night of the preliminaries, just a chance for the judges to get an early look at the contestants and their talents including those from delaware, new jersey and pennsylvania. and, of course, the big finish will come this sunday. you can watch the 95th miss america pageant live from atlantic city agencies boardwalk hall right here on channel 6. we are going to get some rain finally come tomorrow. >> yes, each later tonight. we have rain moving in bringing a break in the heat and humidity. the heat wave will be ending. stormtracker live double scan showing most of the region is rain-free, but we are beginning to see pop-up downpours and thunderstorms. this one cluster moving into berks county, and two lightning strikes associated with it. popping up out of nowhere right over 422 with heavy downpours. not moving much at all.

also see activity across the lehigh valley south of allentown right now. over hanover and easton. eight lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes with this view. this is all moving up to the north and east. this is it all ahead of a cold front that is it moving in and bringing an end to the heat and humidity. today's high in philadelphia, 93 degrees. just 1 degree shy of the record high set way back in the 1880's. allentown though set a new record high of 95 degrees. reading and trenton tying record highs. reading 94, trenton 93, and wilmington not a record but certainly still hot, 90 degrees. officially heat wave number six. we have had 37 days this we are with temperatures in the 90s. right now philadelphia 81 degrees. still warm and muggy night. reading also 81. trenton 77. millville 80. and cape may 77 degrees with winds out of the southwest. satellite 6 along with action radar showing the actual cold front is right over central pennsylvania. but who will happen, awaiting

low pressure to develop on the southern flank of the system moves in. what it will do is enhance the moisture and slow down the front of the morning bus stop forecast, lots of clouds, spotty showers. bring an umbrella or rain jacket. by 8:00, 75. a very humid morning. and futuretracker showing we won't see much activity for the morning commute. at 7:00, a couple of spotty showers. lots of clouds around. then it gets more juicy heading towards lunchtime. showers are developing, especially south of philadelphia. the evening commute this is going to be the wet commute of the two commutes tomorrow. 5:00, some heavy rain, some thunderstorms. this will begin to lift out of our region around 10:00 and 11:00 in the evening. looking at the potential for a lot of rain. in general, about 3/4 to 1 1/2 of rain. and heavy downpours can get locally up to 3 inches of rain. the heaviest in the afternoon.

the problem with the rain coming very quickly, the ground is dry and it could cause a lot of run-off creating poor drainage and localized flooding and ponding on roads. the accuweather seven-day forecast heat wave over. heavy rain in the afternoon. friday, sunny and low humidity, 84. saturday, showers move in in the afternoon, and saturday night could have a few lingering showers on sunday morning. and high pressure builds in. monday, feeling like september finally. 76 degrees. we warm up to 82 on tuesday and wednesday 85 but low humidity. we desperately need the rain and quite a bit of it on the way tomorrow. >> thank you. teachers beginning the new year taking advantage of a number of new teaching tools at the charter school in southwest philadelphia. they have a new garden, a new kitchen and a new playground. during the summer volunteers helped to create the additions and they were recognized for hard work tonight. renovations on the jewishing
